What trimless plaster-in downlights are, how they differ from standard recessed fittings, how many a room needs and how the installation actually works.

The short answer

A plaster-in (trimless) downlight is skimmed into the ceiling itself, so the finished surface shows a clean aperture of light and no metal ring. It costs a little more and needs a plasterer as well as an electrician, which makes it a renovation-stage decision — and it is the single biggest upgrade in how a lit ceiling looks. Plan on 4–6 well-placed fittings for a typical 3×4m room, placed over tasks rather than in a grid.

Stand in a room lit by ordinary recessed spots and look up: the ceiling is polka-dotted with metal trim rings, each one announcing itself. The plaster-in downlight is the answer to that — a fitting that becomes part of the ceiling rather than an object attached to it. It is standard practice in high-end residential design and still rare in UK homes, mostly because nobody explains it at the moment people are choosing. This is that explanation.

How it actually works

A trimless fitting has a plaster flange in place of a bezel. The sequence: the electrician first-fixes the housing to the plasterboard, the plasterer skims over the flange so board and fitting become one continuous surface, it is sanded and painted with the ceiling, and the light engine clips in last. The result is an aperture, not an appliance — at night, pools of light from nowhere; by day, an unbroken ceiling.

How many, and where

Ignore the spacing formulas that produce nine-light grids. Downlights are placed, not distributed: one over each place work happens (worktop runs, the hob, the sink, the desk, the shower), then only enough between them to lift the general level. In practice a 3×4m kitchen or bathroom lands at four to six fittings; a living room often needs fewer still, because lamps should be doing that room's evening work. Tiltable versions earn their place at the edges — washing a wall or aiming into an alcove — and a wall washed with light does more for a room's apparent size than any number of straight-down beams.

The three practical rules

The Enso ruleIf you are reboarding or building, choose trimless — that window closes with the plasterer and never reopens cheaply. If the ceiling is staying, choose the slimmest standard fitting you can and spend the difference on better bulbs. Both roads end at the same place: light you notice, hardware you don't.

What is a plaster-in downlight?
A recessed downlight with no visible bezel: its flange is fixed to the plasterboard, skimmed over and painted, so the finished ceiling shows only a clean aperture of light. Standard downlights sit in a cut hole with a visible metal trim ring; plaster-in fittings make the hardware disappear entirely.
How many downlights do I need per room?
Work from placement, not a spacing formula: put one where each task happens, then check the general wash — in practice most rooms land at one fitting per 1.5–2m² of ceiling that actually needs light. A 3×4m room typically wants 4–6 well-placed fittings, not the 9-grid a formula produces.
Can you fit plaster-in downlights in an existing ceiling?
Yes, but it is a plastering job as well as an electrical one: the fitting is set into the board, skimmed and painted. That makes it easiest during a renovation or reboard. For a decorated ceiling you want to keep untouched, a slim standard fitting is the pragmatic choice.
Do downlights need to be fire-rated?
Where the ceiling is a fire barrier — which means most UK ceilings with habitable rooms above — yes: cutting holes in plasterboard compromises its fire resistance unless the fittings restore it.
