A plaster-in (trimless) downlight is skimmed into the ceiling itself, so the finished surface shows a clean aperture of light and no metal ring. It costs a little more and needs a plasterer as well as an electrician, which makes it a renovation-stage decision — and it is the single biggest upgrade in how a lit ceiling looks. Plan on 4–6 well-placed fittings for a typical 3×4m room, placed over tasks rather than in a grid.
Stand in a room lit by ordinary recessed spots and look up: the ceiling is polka-dotted with metal trim rings, each one announcing itself. The plaster-in downlight is the answer to that — a fitting that becomes part of the ceiling rather than an object attached to it. It is standard practice in high-end residential design and still rare in UK homes, mostly because nobody explains it at the moment people are choosing. This is that explanation.
How it actually works
A trimless fitting has a plaster flange in place of a bezel. The sequence: the electrician first-fixes the housing to the plasterboard, the plasterer skims over the flange so board and fitting become one continuous surface, it is sanded and painted with the ceiling, and the light engine clips in last. The result is an aperture, not an appliance — at night, pools of light from nowhere; by day, an unbroken ceiling.

How many, and where
Ignore the spacing formulas that produce nine-light grids. Downlights are placed, not distributed: one over each place work happens (worktop runs, the hob, the sink, the desk, the shower), then only enough between them to lift the general level. In practice a 3×4m kitchen or bathroom lands at four to six fittings; a living room often needs fewer still, because lamps should be doing that room's evening work. Tiltable versions earn their place at the edges — washing a wall or aiming into an alcove — and a wall washed with light does more for a room's apparent size than any number of straight-down beams.
