Downlights

Downlights are the layer you should notice least. The pieces here are chosen for low glare and honest colour rather than raw output — plaster-in fittings that disappear into the ceiling entirely, and fire-rated options where the regulations require them. Keep them off the middle of the room and aim them at worktops, walls and artwork instead; a grid of downlights overhead is the single most common lighting mistake in a British kitchen.
