Buying Guide
Frequently Asked Questions
What size rattan pendant do I need over a dining table?
For a single pendant over a round or square table, choose a shade roughly one third of the table's width — a 120cm table suits a shade around 40cm. Rattan is the exception to the usual caution about going large: because the weave is open and the shade is light, an oversized rattan pendant reads as generous rather than heavy. Over a long rectangular table, two or three matched shades work better than one.
How high should a rattan pendant hang?
Hang the bottom of the shade 75 to 90cm above a dining table, or 75 to 85cm above a kitchen island where people stand. Those figures assume a standard 2.4m UK ceiling; add roughly 8cm of drop for every additional 30cm of ceiling height. Because rattan is open-weave, hanging slightly lower is more forgiving than it would be with a solid shade.
Do rattan pendant lights give enough light?
An open weave lets a great deal of light through, but it scatters rather than directs it, so a rattan pendant is an ambient light rather than a task light. Over a kitchen island where you need to see what you are chopping, pair it with downlights or under-cabinet lighting. Tighter weaves throw more light downward and cast stronger shadow patterns on the ceiling.
What bulb should I use in a rattan pendant?
Use 2700K warm white with a CRI of 90 or above — warm light brings out the honey tones in natural rattan, while a cool bulb makes it look grey and dry. Because the bulb is partly visible through the weave, a decorative filament LED is worth the small extra cost. Observe the maximum wattage: rattan is a natural fibre and prolonged heat dries it out.
How do you clean a rattan light shade?
Dust with a soft brush or the brush attachment of a vacuum on low suction, working along the direction of the weave. For marks, a barely damp cloth is acceptable, but dry it immediately — rattan absorbs water and can swell or discolour. Never soak it or use cleaning products. In a kitchen, dust more often, as grease traps dust in the weave.
Will a rattan pendant suit a modern interior?
Yes — rattan reads as texture rather than as a style statement, which is why it appears in Japandi, coastal, Scandinavian and contemporary schemes alike. In a minimal room it supplies the warmth that painted plaster and pale timber lack. Two-tone and charcoal-dipped weaves sit more comfortably in a contemporary scheme than pure natural, which leans coastal.
Are rattan pendants suitable for bathrooms or outdoors?
No. Rattan is a natural fibre that absorbs moisture, swells and eventually discolours or loosens at the weave. Bathrooms need a fitting with an IP rating appropriate to its zone, and outdoor use needs IP44 as a minimum. A covered porch is still too humid for rattan in a British climate.
Are rattan light shades heavy to hang?
No — they are among the lightest shades of their size, which is one of their practical advantages. Even an 85cm XXL rattan pendant weighs a fraction of a comparable glass or stone fitting, so a standard ceiling fixing is usually sufficient. Check the stated weight on the product page if you are fixing into plasterboard without a joist behind it.
