Product Care Guide
Plaster
Dust with a soft, dry cloth only. Plaster is porous, so avoid all liquid cleaners — they'll stain or mark the surface. Raw plaster fittings can be painted: use a matte emulsion in two thin coats, allowing each to dry fully before powering on. Don't install in bathrooms or other damp areas unless the IP rating allows it.
Brass & metal
Brass develops a natural patina over time, which most people prefer. To keep the current finish, wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth. For a brighter look, use a brass-specific polish sparingly. Never use lemon, vinegar, or abrasive cleaners — these damage lacquered brass irreversibly. Polished chrome and nickel finishes can be wiped with a damp microfibre cloth.
Glass
Wipe with a soft, damp cloth and dry thoroughly to avoid water marks. For stubborn marks, a mild glass cleaner is fine. Always ensure the fitting is switched off and fully cool before cleaning.
Fabric shades
Dust with a soft brush or vacuum on the lowest setting using an upholstery attachment. Avoid wet cleaning — fabric shades can stain, warp, or shrink. Spot-clean small marks only with a barely-damp microfibre cloth.
Ceramic
Glazed ceramic can be wiped with a soft, damp cloth and a mild soap solution. Unglazed or matte ceramic should be kept dry and dusted only. Always ensure the fitting is switched off and cool first.
Before you clean
Switch off at the wall and let the fitting cool fully. Never spray cleaner directly onto a fitting — apply to a cloth first. If your fitting has visible wiring, electrical components, or LED drivers exposed, keep moisture well away from these areas.

What type of bulb does the Ilys rattan pendant take and is it included?
The Ilys requires a standard E27 screw-in bulb, which is not included in the box. You can use any E27 LED, filament, or traditional bulb up to the maximum wattage stated on the lampholder (typically 40–60W for this type of fitting). We'd recommend a warm white (2700K) LED bulb to complement the natural rattan and create a cosy glow.
Can I use this pendant on a dimmer switch?
The fitting itself is compatible with dimming, but whether it dims depends entirely on the bulb you choose. You'll need to fit a dimmable E27 LED bulb and ensure your existing dimmer switch is LED-compatible. If you have an older rotary dimmer, it may need replacing with an LED-compatible trailing-edge model to avoid flickering.
Do I need an electrician to install this pendant light, or can I fit it myself?
Under Part P of the Building Regulations in England and Wales, you can replace an existing pendant light on a like-for-like basis without notifying Building Control, provided you're competent and confident working safely with mains electricity. If you're installing a new lighting circuit or are unsure, you must use a qualified electrician or registered competent person. Always isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before starting work.
What are the exact dimensions and how low will it hang?
The Ilys shade measures 45cm in diameter and just 17cm in height, making it ideal for lower ceilings or rooms where you don't want the fitting to drop too far. Total drop depends on your ceiling rose height and the length of cable you use, but the compact 17cm depth means it won't intrude into headroom even when hung relatively low over a dining table.
Is this rattan pendant suitable for a bathroom?
No, the Ilys has no IP rating and is designed for dry, indoor use only. It is not suitable for bathrooms or any environment with moisture or steam. For bathrooms, you'll need a fitting rated at least IP44 (or IP65 for shower zones), which this natural rattan shade does not meet.
Will the rattan weave block too much light or make the room dark?
The open petal design allows plenty of light to escape both upwards and downwards, though the woven rattan will naturally diffuse and soften the glow. You'll get lovely dappled shadow patterns on surrounding surfaces rather than harsh direct light. For ample ambient brightness, choose a higher lumen output bulb (800–1000 lumens) in a warm white tone.
