The installation involves mains wiring, typically requiring an armoured cable run underground from your house or an outdoor junction box. Your electrician will need to ensure the circuit is properly protected and the installation is certified.
Is IP44 sufficient for an exposed garden path or does it need to be sheltered?
IP44 is suitable for most UK garden path and driveway applications, including exposed locations. This rating provides protection against solid objects over 1mm and splashing water from any direction, making it weather-resistant for typical British conditions including rain. It's ideal for pathways, driveways, and borders, though it should not be submerged or subjected to high-pressure water jets.
What type of bulb does this bollard take and is it included?
The Tokyo uses a standard E27 ES (Edison Screw) bulb, which is not included with the fitting. You can use any E27 LED bulb up to the maximum wattage rating, and since the light is dimmable, you can pair it with a dimmable E27 LED for full control. We recommend a warm white (2700K-3000K) LED bulb for creating a welcoming ambience along pathways.
Can this path light be dimmed and what type of dimmer switch is needed?
Yes, this bollard is fully dimmable when paired with a compatible dimmable E27 bulb. You'll need a trailing edge dimmer switch installed by your electrician, which is specifically designed for LED bulbs and provides smooth, flicker-free dimming. Ensure both the bulb and dimmer are compatible with each other for best performance.
How tall is this bollard and will it provide enough light for a path?
The Tokyo stands 110cm (1.1 metres) tall with a diameter of 115mm, making it an ideal height for path lighting without causing glare at eye level. The light output will depend on the E27 bulb you choose—a 6-8W LED bulb (600-800 lumens) typically provides ample illumination for pathways, creating both guidance and ambience. For longer paths, consider spacing multiple bollards 3-4 metres apart.
What material is the white finish and will it discolour outdoors over time?
The Tokyo is constructed from stainless steel and polycarbonate with a white powder-coated finish, which is designed to withstand outdoor conditions. Quality powder coating is highly durable and resistant to UV degradation, rust, and general weathering in UK climates. With normal exposure, the white finish should maintain its appearance for many years, though periodic cleaning will help keep it looking fresh.
