Good to know
A few questions,
before it comes home.
Does the Tarn outdoor wall light require an electrician to install?
Yes, this is a hardwired Class I fitting that must be connected directly to your mains circuit, so it requires installation by a qualified electrician. Under Part P of the Building Regulations in England and Wales, any new outdoor lighting circuits or alterations to existing circuits must comply with electrical safety standards, which typically means using a registered electrician who can self-certify the work. The installation difficulty is rated as moderate, and it's suitable for mounting on plasterboard, brick, or masonry walls.
Can I replace the LED bulb in this wall light when it stops working?
No, the Tarn features an integrated 12W LED module that is built into the fitting and cannot be replaced like a traditional bulb. The LED is rated for 30,000 hours of use, which equates to around 10-15 years of typical evening use. When the LED eventually reaches the end of its lifespan, the entire fitting would need to be replaced, though this is covered by a 2-year warranty for manufacturing defects.
Is this wall light bright enough to illuminate a front door or porch area?
Yes, with an output of 753 lumens at 3000K warm white, the Tarn provides sufficient illumination for entrance areas, doorways, and pathways. The 12W integrated LED casts light in a downward cone pattern, creating a welcoming pool of light that's ideal for guiding visitors safely to your door whilst also highlighting architectural features. The motion sensor will trigger the light when movement is detected, adding both convenience and security.
What is the IP rating and is it suitable for exposed outdoor locations?
This fitting has an IP44 rating, which means it's protected against solid objects larger than 1mm and splashing water from any direction. It's suitable for most sheltered outdoor locations such as covered porches, under eaves, or recessed doorways, but it's not recommended for fully exposed positions subject to driving rain or direct water jets. For completely exposed locations, you'd ideally want IP65 or higher.
Can this outdoor wall light be used with a dimmer switch?
No, the Tarn is not dimmable and will not work with dimmer switches. The integrated 12W LED operates at a fixed output of 753 lumens at 3000K warm white. If you need adjustable brightness control for your outdoor lighting, you would need to look for a different fitting that specifically states it is dimmable with compatible LED dimming systems.
What are the exact dimensions of this wall light?
The Tarn measures 239mm wide, 175mm deep (projection from the wall), and 301mm tall. This makes it a substantial lantern-style fitting that will create a strong visual presence on your exterior wall, whilst the 175mm projection means it extends a reasonable distance to cast light downwards effectively. Make sure you have adequate clearance below the fitting for the downward light distribution to work as intended.
