Product Care Guide
Plaster
Dust with a soft, dry cloth only. Plaster is porous, so avoid all liquid cleaners — they'll stain or mark the surface. Raw plaster fittings can be painted: use a matte emulsion in two thin coats, allowing each to dry fully before powering on. Don't install in bathrooms or other damp areas unless the IP rating allows it.
Brass & metal
Brass develops a natural patina over time, which most people prefer. To keep the current finish, wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth. For a brighter look, use a brass-specific polish sparingly. Never use lemon, vinegar, or abrasive cleaners — these damage lacquered brass irreversibly. Polished chrome and nickel finishes can be wiped with a damp microfibre cloth.
Glass
Wipe with a soft, damp cloth and dry thoroughly to avoid water marks. For stubborn marks, a mild glass cleaner is fine. Always ensure the fitting is switched off and fully cool before cleaning.
Fabric shades
Dust with a soft brush or vacuum on the lowest setting using an upholstery attachment. Avoid wet cleaning — fabric shades can stain, warp, or shrink. Spot-clean small marks only with a barely-damp microfibre cloth.
Ceramic
Glazed ceramic can be wiped with a soft, damp cloth and a mild soap solution. Unglazed or matte ceramic should be kept dry and dusted only. Always ensure the fitting is switched off and cool first.
Before you clean
Switch off at the wall and let the fitting cool fully. Never spray cleaner directly onto a fitting — apply to a cloth first. If your fitting has visible wiring, electrical components, or LED drivers exposed, keep moisture well away from these areas.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Defoe recessed wall light need to be installed by an electrician?
Yes, as this is a hardwired recessed fitting, installation involves mains electrical work and creating a recess in the wall. Under Part P of the Building Regulations in England and Wales, this type of work must be carried out by a qualified electrician or certified competent person. The fitting requires a cut-out in the wall and connection to your mains supply, so professional installation is strongly recommended.
Can I replace the LED bulb in this fitting when it stops working?
No, the Defoe features an integrated 3W LED module rather than a replaceable bulb. Integrated LEDs typically last 20,000-30,000 hours (around 15-20 years with normal domestic use), but when the LED eventually fails, the entire light unit will need to be replaced. The advantage is a sleeker design and no ongoing bulb replacement costs during its long lifespan.
Is this wall light suitable for use in a bathroom?
No, the Defoe has an IP20 rating, which means it has no moisture protection and is only suitable for dry indoor locations. For bathroom use, you would need a minimum of IP44 (or IP65 in shower zones), so this fitting should be installed in bedrooms, hallways, living rooms, or other dry areas only.
How much light does this reading light produce and what colour is it?
The integrated LED produces 300 lumens at 3000K, which is a warm white colour temperature. This output is ideal for focused task lighting such as bedside reading rather than general room illumination—300 lumens is roughly equivalent to a traditional 25-30W incandescent bulb, providing a comfortable, concentrated light pool without being overly bright.
What are the dimensions and how deep does the wall recess need to be?
The Defoe measures 169mm wide, 67mm high, and projects 140mm from the wall when installed. Because this is a recessed fitting, you'll need to create a cavity in the wall to house the majority of the unit—your electrician will need to confirm the exact recess depth required based on the wall construction and the fitting's backbox dimensions.
Is the Defoe adjustable and can it be dimmed?
The fitting features an adjustable reading spot, allowing you to direct the light beam where needed, which is particularly useful for bedside task lighting. However, there is no mention of dimming capability in the specifications, so you should assume this LED is non-dimmable and will operate at full 300-lumen output when switched on.
