Does the Umi pendant light require an electrician to install?
Yes, this is a hardwired Class I ceiling pendant and must be installed by a qualified electrician in accordance with UK Building Regulations Part P. The fitting connects directly to your mains wiring, typically via a ceiling rose or junction box, and requires an earth connection. While the manufacturer rates the installation difficulty as easy for a professional, it is not a plug-in fixture suitable for DIY installation.
What type of bulbs does this pendant use and are they included?
The Umi uses three G9 capsule bulbs (sometimes called G9 pin bulbs), which are included with the fitting. Each bulb delivers 250 lumens at 3000K for a warm white light. G9 bulbs are readily available from most lighting retailers and supermarkets when you need replacements, and you can choose between halogen or LED G9 versions as long as they're compatible with non-dimmable circuits.
Can I use this pendant light on a dimmer switch?
No, this fixture is not dimmable and should only be connected to a standard on/off switch. Attempting to use it with a dimmer switch may cause flickering, buzzing, or damage to the bulbs and control gear. If you require dimming functionality, you would need to choose a different pendant specifically rated as dimmable.
What are the dimensions and how low does it hang over a dining table?
The Umi measures 1000mm wide by 380mm deep, with a maximum drop of 2500mm from ceiling to the bottom of the fixture. The suspension height is adjustable via the 2.5-metre cable, so you can shorten it during installation to suit your ceiling height—typically 60–80cm above a dining table is ideal. For a standard 2.4m ceiling, you'd have plenty of cable to achieve the right drop while maintaining headroom.
Is this pendant suitable for a bathroom or kitchen?
The Umi has an IP20 rating, making it suitable for general indoor living spaces, dining rooms, and kitchens, but not for bathrooms. IP20 offers no moisture protection, so it cannot be installed in bathroom zones where splashing or high humidity is present. For kitchens, ensure it's positioned away from direct steam or splashes from hobs and sinks.
What colour temperature and brightness does this fitting provide?
This pendant produces a warm white light at 3000K across all three lampholders, delivering a combined 750 lumens (250 lumens per bulb). This colour temperature creates a cosy, inviting ambience suited to dining areas and living spaces rather than task-focused environments. The light output is moderate and designed for ambient and accent lighting rather than bright functional illumination.
