Product Care Guide
Plaster
Dust with a soft, dry cloth only. Plaster is porous, so avoid all liquid cleaners — they'll stain or mark the surface. Raw plaster fittings can be painted: use a matte emulsion in two thin coats, allowing each to dry fully before powering on. Don't install in bathrooms or other damp areas unless the IP rating allows it.
Brass & metal
Brass develops a natural patina over time, which most people prefer. To keep the current finish, wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth. For a brighter look, use a brass-specific polish sparingly. Never use lemon, vinegar, or abrasive cleaners — these damage lacquered brass irreversibly. Polished chrome and nickel finishes can be wiped with a damp microfibre cloth.
Glass
Wipe with a soft, damp cloth and dry thoroughly to avoid water marks. For stubborn marks, a mild glass cleaner is fine. Always ensure the fitting is switched off and fully cool before cleaning.
Fabric shades
Dust with a soft brush or vacuum on the lowest setting using an upholstery attachment. Avoid wet cleaning — fabric shades can stain, warp, or shrink. Spot-clean small marks only with a barely-damp microfibre cloth.
Ceramic
Glazed ceramic can be wiped with a soft, damp cloth and a mild soap solution. Unglazed or matte ceramic should be kept dry and dusted only. Always ensure the fitting is switched off and cool first.
Before you clean
Switch off at the wall and let the fitting cool fully. Never spray cleaner directly onto a fitting — apply to a cloth first. If your fitting has visible wiring, electrical components, or LED drivers exposed, keep moisture well away from these areas.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this ceiling light need to be installed by a qualified electrician?
Yes, the Modern is hardwired and must be installed by a qualified electrician in compliance with UK Building Regulations Part P. As a Class I fitting, it requires an earth connection and proper connection to your mains supply, typically via a ceiling rose or junction box. If you're replacing an existing ceiling light on the same circuit, the work may fall under minor works, but it's always best to use a registered electrician.
What bulbs do I need and are they included?
This fitting requires 2 x E14 SES (Small Edison Screw) bulbs with a maximum wattage of 7W each, but bulbs are not included. We recommend LED E14 candle or golf ball bulbs for energy efficiency. Since the fitting is dimmable, ensure you purchase dimmable E14 bulbs if you plan to use it with a dimmer switch.
Can this ceiling light be used with a dimmer switch?
Yes, the Modern is dimmable, but you must use dimmable E14 bulbs (not included) and ensure your dimmer switch is compatible with LED bulbs if you're using LEDs. Standard rotary dimmers designed for incandescent bulbs often don't work well with LEDs, so check your dimmer is rated for the bulb type you choose.
What are the dimensions and how much clearance does it take from the ceiling?
The fitting measures 300mm in diameter and has a height of 80mm, making it a low-profile flush mount ideal for rooms with lower ceilings. As it sits directly against the ceiling surface, it only projects 80mm down into the room, leaving plenty of headroom while still providing the decorative fabric drum shade.
Is this ceiling light suitable for bathrooms?
No, this fitting is not suitable for bathrooms as it has no IP rating specified and is designed for general indoor use only. Bathroom lighting must meet specific IP and zone requirements under UK wiring regulations, and this linen fabric fitting is not rated for moisture or steam exposure.
What size room is this ceiling light suitable for?
With 2 lampholders each taking a maximum 7W bulb, this fitting is best suited to smaller rooms such as hallways, cloakrooms, bedrooms, or cosy studies. The 300mm diameter shade provides a decorative accent rather than high-output task lighting, so it may not provide sufficient illumination as the sole light source in larger living areas or kitchens.
