Alabaster is the reason candlelight looks the way it does in old paintings. It is a translucent stone — gypsum, quarried in slabs and turned or carved into shades — and when light passes through it, the stone scatters it internally before it reaches the room. The result is a glow with no visible source and no glare at all: soft, cream-toned, and warmer than any diffuser glass can manage. It is also the reason alabaster fittings cost more than their glass equivalents. You are buying a piece of quarried stone, machined to a wall thickness thin enough to transmit light and thick enough not to crack.

Every Piece Is Different, and That Is the Point

Alabaster carries natural veining — usually cream and honey, sometimes with faint copper or grey threads running through it. No two shades are identical, and the piece you receive will not match the photograph exactly. Lit from within, the veining becomes visible as darker and lighter passages across the shade, which is precisely what people buy it for. If you need two matching pieces either side of a bed or a chimney breast, order them together so they come from adjacent stock, and accept that they will be siblings rather than twins.

Unlit, alabaster reads as a pale stone ornament — chalky, matt, with a faint depth to it. This matters in a room where the fitting is visible all day: unlike glass, it does not go black and reflective when switched off.

Where Alabaster Works Best

Bulbs: Warmer Than You Think

Use 2700K, and if you can find a good 2400K lamp, better still. Alabaster's own colour is warm cream, so a cool bulb fights the material and produces a slightly grey, lifeless result that wastes the whole point of the stone. A CRI of 90 or above matters more here than usual, because the light you see has already been filtered through a natural material — poor colour rendering compounds. Dimming is worth wiring in; alabaster at 30 per cent output is one of the most pleasant lights you can put in a house.

Do not exceed the stated maximum wattage. It is not a fire risk so much as a heat-and-stone problem: sustained heat against a natural material with internal veining is how hairline cracks start. Handling, Cleaning and Weight

Alabaster is softer than marble and porous. Clean it dry, with a soft brush or a dry microfibre cloth — never a damp cloth, and never any cleaning product, both of which will stain the stone permanently. Dust it occasionally rather than letting a film build up, since dust on a translucent shade is visible the moment the light goes on.

Weight is the practical constraint. A stone shade is several times heavier than its glass equivalent, so pendants and chandeliers must be fixed into a joist or a noggin rather than into plasterboard alone, and wall pieces need proper fixings for the substrate.
