Brass Pendant Lights

A pendant is the one light in a room that people look at directly, which is why the finish matters more here than anywhere else. Brass earns its place because it glows under warm light rather than reflecting it back coldly — a chrome pendant over a dining table reads as hardware, a brass one reads as jewellery. Get the height and the scale right and a single brass pendant will do more for a kitchen island or a dining table than any amount of ceiling spots.

Hanging Height: The Two Numbers That Matter

Over a dining table, hang the bottom of the pendant 75 to 90cm above the table top. That sounds low written down and looks right in the room: high enough to clear sight lines across the table, low enough to light the food rather than the ceiling. Over a kitchen island, go slightly higher — 75 to 85cm above the worktop — because people stand rather than sit at an island and you want the bulb above eye level.

Both numbers assume a standard 2.4m UK ceiling. Add roughly 8cm of drop for every extra 30cm of ceiling height above that. Our guides go into the detail for pendant height over a dining table and for pendants over a kitchen island, including what to do when the ceiling is lower than standard.

One Pendant, or Three?

The usual mistake is buying one pendant that is too small rather than the right number at the right size. Over an island, the rule of thumb is a pendant every 75 to 90cm of run, which means a 1.8m island wants two and a 2.4m island wants three. Odd numbers look more relaxed than even ones. Space them evenly and keep at least 15cm between the outer pendants and the ends of the island so the arrangement does not look crowded.

Over a round or square dining table, one substantial pendant beats three small ones. Aim for a shade roughly a third of the table width — a 120cm table wants something around 40cm across. Over a long rectangular table, either two or three matched pendants or a single linear bar fitting works; the bar reads calmer in a room that already has a lot going on.

Shade Material Changes the Light, Not Just the Look

Ribbed or fluted glass scatters light into soft vertical stripes and hides the bulb filament from most angles — the safest choice over a table where people sit facing the light. Clear glass shows the bulb entirely, which is beautiful with a decorative filament lamp and unforgiving with a bare LED. Alabaster and opal diffuse completely, giving an even glow with no glare at all, which is why they suit bedrooms and low ceilings. Metal or fabric shades throw all their light downward, making them task lights rather than ambient ones.

Which Brass, and How It Ages

Antique brass is warm and slightly darkened, and forgiving next to oak, painted cabinetry and older houses. Satin and brushed brass are cooler and more even, and sit better in a contemporary kitchen where the metal should read as a considered detail. Unlacquered brass will patina over time — that is the point of it, not a fault — while lacquered and plated finishes hold their colour indefinitely and need only a dry cloth. Avoid abrasive metal polish on either.

Bulbs, Dimming and Installation

Choose 2700K warm white. Push past 3000K and brass reads grey and the room turns clinical. Where the bulb is visible through clear glass, a decorative filament LED is worth the extra pound or two. If the pendant is dimmable, specify a trailing-edge dimmer — most LED flicker and buzz traces back to the wrong dimmer rather than the wrong lamp.

Check the maximum drop before ordering: most pendants ship with adjustable cable or rod that an electrician shortens on site, but a rod-suspended fitting has a fixed range. Heavier multi-light pendants and linear bars need a ceiling that can carry the weight, which in a plasterboard ceiling means fixing to a joist or adding a noggin.
