Black Wall Lights

Black is the finish that reads as a decision. On a pale wall a matt black fitting draws the eye and holds it, which is why it suits rooms with little else going on — a plain hallway, a white bathroom, a bedroom with no cornicing to admire. It is also the most practical finish in the range: it hides fingerprints, dust and the marks that gather around a light switch, and it does not tarnish, patina or need polishing. Where brass asks to be maintained, black asks to be left alone.

Matt, Satin or Antiqued

Matt black is the contemporary default — it absorbs light rather than reflecting it, so the fitting reads as a silhouette and the light itself becomes the feature. Satin and gloss black catch highlights along their edges, which flatters curved and cylindrical forms but shows dust sooner. Antiqued or aged black carries a slight bronze or grey cast in the recesses and suits older houses, where a flat modern black can look imported from a different building.

Powder-coated black is the most durable of the three and is what most outdoor-rated fittings use. Indoors the coating is rarely the deciding factor; the sheen level is.

Mixing Black With Other Metals

Black and brass is the pairing that has defined British kitchens for a decade, and it works because the two are doing different jobs: the black provides the structure, the brass provides the warmth. Keep the ratio uneven — roughly seventy-thirty in either direction — rather than splitting a room evenly between them, which reads as indecision. Several fittings here do the mixing for you with black bodies and gold or brass detailing.

Black with chrome or nickel is harder and usually best kept to separate zones of an open-plan space. Black with dark walls is a specialist look that needs the wall itself to be lit — an up-down or an uplighter — or the fitting simply disappears.

Height, Spacing and Room by Room

Mount decorative wall lights 1.5 to 1.7 metres from the finished floor, and space them every 2 to 2.5 metres along a corridor. Beside a bed, 1.5m puts the light at reading height when you are sitting up. Our guide to lighting a narrow hallway covers the rhythm in a British terrace.

Black earns its keep in bathrooms, where it holds its own against white sanitaryware and tile in a way that pale finishes cannot — but check the IP rating for the zone, set out in our guide to bathroom lighting zones. Adjustable black spots suit reading corners and artwork, where you want the light aimed and the fitting to recede.

Bulbs and the One Mistake to Avoid

Use 2700K warm white with a CRI of 90 or above. The mistake specific to black fittings is reaching for a cool bulb because the finish already feels modern — the result is a hard, grey light with a black object sitting in it, and the room stops feeling like a home. Warm light against black is what makes the contrast pleasant rather than severe.

Where the bulb is visible through a cage or an open shade, a decorative filament lamp does a great deal of work, since the filament becomes the only bright thing against a dark fitting. Specify a trailing-edge dimmer for anything dimmable. To browse wider, see all wall lights, the up and down wall lights, the black-heavy outdoor wall lights range, or everything in black lighting.
