Up & Down Wall Lights

An up and down wall light throws two narrow beams in opposite directions, grazing the wall above and below the fitting rather than lighting the room generally. The effect is architectural: two soft triangles of light on the wall, no glare at eye level, and a ceiling that reads higher than it is. It is the single most effective fitting for a hallway, a staircase or any room where a pendant would be in the way — and because the light is aimed at the wall rather than at you, it is one of the few fittings that looks good with the bulb on and the curtains open.

Paintable Plaster: The Fitting That Disappears

Most of this collection is unfinished gypsum plaster, designed to be painted in the same colour as the wall it sits on. Once painted it reads as part of the architecture rather than as a light fitting, which is why plaster up-downs have become the default in new-build and renovation schemes across the UK. They take standard emulsion straight from the tin you used on the wall — no primer, no special product — and can be repainted every time the room changes.

Plaster fittings are also cut to sit flush, which matters more than it sounds. A conventional sconce stands proud of the wall and casts its own shadow; a plaster up-down sits nearly flat, so the only thing you see is the light. The trade-off is fragility — gypsum chips if knocked during installation, so unpack carefully and paint after fitting rather than before.

The Wall Surface Matters More Than You Think

This is the one thing nobody mentions before you buy. Because the beams graze the wall at a shallow angle, they exaggerate whatever the wall surface is doing. On smooth, well-finished plaster the effect is clean and dramatic. On a wall with filler marks, a poor skim, or textured paper, every imperfection is picked out in relief. If the wall is not in good condition, either fix it first or choose a fitting that projects further from the wall so the beam hits at a wider angle.

The same property is an advantage where you want it: on exposed brick, board-and-batten, or a textured render, an up-down turns the wall itself into the feature.

Height, Spacing and Where They Work

Mount at 1.5 to 1.7 metres from the finished floor, the same as any decorative wall light. Slightly higher looks better where the ceiling is tall, because it centres the two triangles of light in the wall rather than pushing the upper one into the ceiling. In a corridor, space them every 2 to 2.5 metres; our guide to lighting a narrow hallway covers the rhythm in a British terrace.

On a staircase, mount each fitting at the same height above its own tread rather than at a single level along the wall — the light should climb with the stairs. Set them out on the wall with a pencil before the electrician arrives; it is much easier to argue with a pencil line than with a hole. There is more in our guide to stairs and landing lighting. In living rooms, up-downs work as the second layer that lifts a low ceiling — see the three-layer living room formula.

Bulbs, Dimming and Wiring

Most up-down fittings take a single G9 or E14 capsule that fires in both directions, so one lamp does both beams. Choose 2700K warm white with a CRI of 90 or above: because the beam lands on a painted surface, poor colour rendering shows up as a slightly dirty cast on the wall. Dimming is worth wiring in from the start, since these are atmosphere lights rather than task lights — specify a trailing-edge dimmer to avoid the flicker that leading-edge units cause with LEDs.

Nearly all of these are hardwired and need a competent electrician; new wiring or a new switch drop is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations. If the fitting is going outdoors or into a bathroom zone it needs an appropriate IP rating — look for the rated pieces here, or browse outdoor wall lights. For the wider range, see all wall lights or brass wall lights.
