Ceiling Lights

Flush, semi-flush, and decorative ceiling fittings for living rooms, kitchens, hallways and bedrooms. The pieces in this edit do the unglamorous, essential job — they fill a room with light without dominating it, and quietly hold the rest of the lighting together.

Buying Guide

Ceiling lights carry most of the general light in a British home, and because ceilings here are often lower than the fittings were designed for, the choice of type matters more than the choice of style. The question to answer first is not “which one looks nice” but “how much headroom do I have, and what is the room for”. Everything else follows from that.

Flush, semi-flush or pendant?

Under about 2.4 metres, flush ceiling lights are the safe answer: they sit tight to the ceiling, leave full walking height and still throw a wide, even wash. Between 2.4 and 2.7 metres a semi-flush fitting with a short drop adds shape without becoming an obstacle. Above 2.7 metres, or over a table or island where nobody walks, a pendant or chandelier earns its keep — the drop is what gives the room a centre.

How much light a room needs

A rough working figure for general lighting is 100–150 lumens per square metre for living rooms and bedrooms, and 200–300 for kitchens and workspaces. A 4m × 4m living room therefore wants around 2,000 lumens from all sources combined, not from the ceiling alone. One ceiling light plus two wall lights or lamps will always feel better than one bright fitting doing everything, because the light arrives from more than one direction and the shadows soften.

Colour temperature and dimming

Stay at 2700K for living spaces and bedrooms, and no cooler than 3000K in kitchens and bathrooms. Anything at 4000K and above flattens colour and makes a room feel like a waiting area. Put every ceiling circuit on a dimmer: the same fitting has to serve a bright Saturday-morning clean and a quiet evening, and dimming is the only way one light does both. Check bulb and dimmer compatibility — trailing-edge dimmers suit most LEDs.

Directional light: spots and downlights

Where you need light to land in a specific place — worktops, a reading chair, artwork — adjustable spotlights and recessed downlights do the job that a central fitting cannot. Use them as a layer alongside a decorative ceiling light rather than as a grid across the whole ceiling; a room lit only by downlights has no focal point and a lot of glare.
