Product Care Guide
Plaster
Dust with a soft, dry cloth only. Plaster is porous, so avoid all liquid cleaners — they'll stain or mark the surface. Raw plaster fittings can be painted: use a matte emulsion in two thin coats, allowing each to dry fully before powering on. Don't install in bathrooms or other damp areas unless the IP rating allows it.
Brass & metal
Brass develops a natural patina over time, which most people prefer. To keep the current finish, wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth. For a brighter look, use a brass-specific polish sparingly. Never use lemon, vinegar, or abrasive cleaners — these damage lacquered brass irreversibly. Polished chrome and nickel finishes can be wiped with a damp microfibre cloth.
Glass
Wipe with a soft, damp cloth and dry thoroughly to avoid water marks. For stubborn marks, a mild glass cleaner is fine. Always ensure the fitting is switched off and fully cool before cleaning.
Fabric shades
Dust with a soft brush or vacuum on the lowest setting using an upholstery attachment. Avoid wet cleaning — fabric shades can stain, warp, or shrink. Spot-clean small marks only with a barely-damp microfibre cloth.
Ceramic
Glazed ceramic can be wiped with a soft, damp cloth and a mild soap solution. Unglazed or matte ceramic should be kept dry and dusted only. Always ensure the fitting is switched off and cool first.
Before you clean
Switch off at the wall and let the fitting cool fully. Never spray cleaner directly onto a fitting — apply to a cloth first. If your fitting has visible wiring, electrical components, or LED drivers exposed, keep moisture well away from these areas.

Questions
Does the Varel Box Lantern require an electrician to install?
Yes, this is a hardwired wall light and must be installed by a qualified electrician in compliance with UK Building Regulations Part P. The fitting connects directly to mains wiring, typically via a BESA box or standard wall back plate, and requires earth connection as it's a Class I fitting. Installation difficulty is rated as moderate due to the weight (1.5kg) and need to secure safely to plasterboard, brick or masonry.
Can this wall light be dimmed?
Yes, the Varel is dimmable when paired with a dimmable E27 bulb and a trailing edge dimmer switch. You'll need to purchase both the bulb and dimmer separately, as neither is included. Ensure your chosen E27 bulb is marked as dimmable and stays within the 10W maximum wattage for reliable dimming performance.
What type of bulb does the Varel Box Lantern take?
This fitting requires one E27 ES (Edison Screw) bulb with a maximum wattage of 10W, which is not included. The clear glass panels make it ideal for showcasing decorative filament LED bulbs in warm white (2200K-2700K) for an authentic heritage look. Stick to the 10W maximum to avoid overheating and ensure safe operation.
Can I use this wall light in a bathroom?
No, the Varel has an IP20 rating which means it's only suitable for dry indoor locations and offers no protection against moisture. For bathroom use, you would need a fitting rated at least IP44 (or IP65 for shower zones). This lantern is best suited to hallways, living rooms, bedrooms or beside internal doorways.
What are the dimensions of the Varel Box Lantern?
The fitting measures 275mm high, 110mm wide and projects 142mm from the wall. This compact lantern size works well in hallways or flanking doorways without protruding too far into circulation space, whilst still providing presence as a decorative feature. At 1.5kg, it requires secure fixing to a suitable wall surface.
What warranty does this aged brass wall light come with?
The Varel Box Lantern is covered by a 2-year manufacturer's warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. The solid brass construction with aged finish is built to last, though the warranty does not cover wear to the finish over time, damage from incorrect installation, or use of bulbs exceeding the 10W maximum rating.
The Enso Standard
Anyone can sell you a light.
We’d rather sell you the right one.
Lighting, considered.
Chosen, not stocked
For every piece here, we passed on hundreds. If a fitting doesn’t earn its place, it isn’t here.
Curation is mostly the art of saying no.
Held to one standard
Copenhagen brass or precision-built LED — every piece is vetted the same way: finish, build, light quality, safety. If it doesn’t pass, it doesn’t stay.
The standard doesn’t care what a light costs.
Nothing left to guess
Every dimension, bulb, IP rating and install note published before you buy — you and your electrician know exactly what arrives.
The spec sheet is the love letter.
Backed, properly
Two-year warranty as standard, 30-day returns. If something isn’t right, we’d rather know — and put it right.
A fitting should outlast the fashion that chose it.
