White Wall Lights

White is the finish you choose when you want the light and not the light fitting. Most of this collection is unfinished gypsum plaster, made to be painted in the same emulsion as the wall it sits on — once painted it reads as part of the architecture rather than as an object hung on it. That is why plaster wall lights have become the default in new-build and renovation schemes across the UK, and why they suit narrow hallways and staircases better than almost anything else.

Paintable Plaster, Ceramic and Glass

Paintable plaster takes ordinary emulsion straight from the tin — no primer, no specialist product — and can be repainted every time the room changes. It also sits nearly flush to the wall, so it casts no shadow of its own. Handmade ceramic brings a glazed surface and a little variation from piece to piece, and reads warmer than plaster in a room with timber or linen in it. Opal and frosted glass diffuses completely, giving even light with no visible filament — the right answer where the fitting sits in your eyeline.

The trade-off with plaster is fragility: gypsum chips if knocked, so unpack carefully and paint after fitting rather than before. Small chips fill and repaint with ordinary filler, which is an advantage no metal fitting has.

Check the Wall Before You Choose the Fitting

Many white fittings are uplighters or up-down designs, which graze light along the wall at a shallow angle. That exaggerates whatever the wall surface is doing. On smooth, well-finished plaster the effect is clean and architectural; on a wall with filler marks, a poor skim or textured paper, every imperfection is picked out in relief. If the wall is not in good condition, make good first or choose a fitting that projects further so the beam strikes at a wider angle.

Where White Works Best

Hallways and staircases, above all. A painted-in fitting keeps a narrow space visually uncluttered, and nothing hangs into head height the way a pendant does. Mount at 1.5 to 1.7 metres and space every 2 to 2.5 metres — see our guide to lighting a narrow hallway and, for stairs, stairs and landing lighting.

In bedrooms and living rooms, white uplighters lift a low ceiling without adding a visual object to a room that may already be busy. Where white struggles is against a strongly coloured or dark wall, unless you paint the fitting to match — which is, of course, exactly what the plaster ones are for. Plaster is interior-only: gypsum absorbs moisture, so bathrooms and outdoors need a rated ceramic, glass or metal fitting instead.

Bulbs, Dimming and Installation

White fittings are more sensitive to bulb colour than dark ones, because the light reflects off the fitting as well as passing through it. Use 2700K with a CRI of 90 or above; a cool lamp turns white plaster grey and the room clinical. Dimming is worth wiring in from the start on uplighters and up-down fittings, as these are atmosphere lights rather than task lights — use a trailing-edge dimmer to avoid LED flicker.

These are hardwired fittings and need a competent electrician; new wiring or any electrical work in a bathroom is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations. For the up-down designs specifically, see up and down wall lights; for the wider range, all wall lights, or the contrasting black wall lights.
