Over a small frame

What matters here

  • Choose a light half to two-thirds the width of the frame.
  • Measure the frame, not the canvas: the frame is what the eye reads.
  • Deep frames need a longer reach so the beam clears the moulding.

Maison Picture Light — Polished Brass, Swan Neck

£56 Free UK delivery over £40 · 30-day returns

A polished brass head, 23 cm wide, on a swan neck that reaches 22 cm from the wall and angles up and down. That reach clears a deep frame and carries light down the picture, while the neck keeps glare off the glazing. One E14 bulb, so you choose a high-CRI LED.

Over a large painting

What matters here

  • A frame around 100 cm wide wants a light of 50 cm or more.
  • Above about 150 cm wide, space two lights evenly instead of one.
  • Use warm 2700–3000K light so the colours read true.

The same swan-neck light as our brass Maison, in matt black that sits quietly on dark painted joinery. It reaches 22 cm from the wall, enough to lean out past the top shelf and drop the beam down the spines, and its 23 cm head lights one bay. Switched on the fitting, with one E14 bulb.

Questions we get asked

What size picture light do I need?

Choose a light roughly half to two-thirds the width of the frame. A 40 cm light suits a picture about 60–80 cm wide, and a 23 cm light one about 35–45 cm.

Where should a picture light be mounted?

Hang the picture first, then fix the light to the wall just above the frame, with the head a few centimetres above the top edge and angled down. A wall fixing is steadier than one clipped to the frame.

Rechargeable or wired: which picture light should I choose?

A rechargeable light screws to the wall and needs no electrician, which suits renters and finished walls. A wired one needs a fused spur or wall-light point fitted by a registered electrician, but never needs charging.

What colour temperature should a picture light be?

Warm, at 2700–3000K, and with a bulb-based light pick an LED marked CRI 90 or higher. Avoid anything bluer: 4000K flattens an oil painting.

Will a picture light damage a painting?

LEDs give off very little ultraviolet or heat in their beam, so for a picture lit for a few evening hours, direct sunlight is the bigger risk. For anything valuable or fragile, ask a conservator.

How do I stop glare on a picture behind glass?

Keep the head close above the frame and angle it steeply down, so the reflection drops towards the floor. If that is not enough, have it reglazed with anti-reflective glass.

Not sure yet?

Let the light finder narrow it down.
