Where weight is a worry

What matters here

  • Stone-effect shades are moulded resin, far lighter than quarried stone.

Questions we get asked

Is travertine lighting real stone?

It depends on the listing. Real travertine is named as travertine or natural stone, while stone-effect shades are moulded resin. Every pick in this guide says which it is in its Material row.

How heavy is a stone pendant, and how should it be fixed?

Heavier than it looks. Hang it from a fixing screwed into a ceiling joist or timber noggin, not from the flex or plasterboard alone, and check its weight against the ceiling rose and flex rating with your electrician.

How high should a stone pendant hang?

Over a dining table, keep 75–85 cm between the tabletop and the bottom of the shade. Over a kitchen island, hang it 75–90 cm above the worktop.

Does travertine glow like alabaster?

No. Travertine blocks light, so it gives a pool below with a warm spill at the rim. Alabaster is translucent and glows through its whole body, which is why it suits atmosphere rather than task light.

Which bulb suits a stone light?

A warm, dimmable LED around 2700K flatters the stone's honey tones. Most of these fittings take E27 or G9 bulbs at modest maximum wattages, so check the Light row on each pick.

How do I clean travertine and alabaster?

Switch off, let the bulb cool and dust with a soft, dry cloth. Keep water, solvents and acids such as vinegar, lemon and limescale remover away from the stone.
