Questions we get asked

How high should a pendant hang over a dining table?

Leave 75–85 cm between the tabletop and the bottom of the shade, and centre it on the table rather than the room. Stay in that band even under a high ceiling; the drop just gets longer.

How high should pendants hang over a kitchen island?

Hang the bottom of the shade 75–85 cm above the worktop. Under a ceiling above 2.7 m you can go to 90 cm; under 2.4 m, stay near 75 cm.

What size pendant light do I need?

Add the room's length and width in metres and multiply by 8 for a starting diameter in centimetres: a 4 × 3.5 m room gives 60 cm. Over a table, size to the table instead, at half to three-quarters of its width.

How much headroom should I leave under a pendant?

Where people walk underneath, keep about 2.0–2.1 m clear between the floor and the bottom of the fitting. On a 2.4 m ceiling that leaves only 30–40 cm for rose, flex and shade, so choose a shallow one or go flush.

What colour temperature bulb should I use in a pendant?

2700K for living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms and hallways. Over a kitchen island, 3000K suits prep and 2700K suits evenings. Put every pendant on a dimmer.

Do I need an electrician to fit a pendant light?

Every pendant in this guide is listed as needing an electrician. New circuits, extra ceiling points or a row of pendants from one supply should be done by a registered electrician under Part P.
