Questions we get asked

What counts as a low ceiling?

Most modern UK homes have ceilings of around 2.3–2.4 m. Below about 2.4 m we'd go flush and keep semi-flush for rooms with 2.4 m to spare; under about 2.3 m, let wall lights and lamps carry the room.

How far should a light hang from a low ceiling?

Keep 2.0–2.1 m clear between the floor and the bottom of any light people walk beneath. On a 2.4 m ceiling that leaves 30–40 cm for the whole fitting, and on 2.3 m about 20–30 cm.

What size ceiling light do I need for a low room?

Add the room's length and width in metres and multiply by 8 for a diameter in centimetres: a 3 × 3 m bedroom gives about 48 cm. Under 2.4 m, round down and keep it tight to the plaster.

Can I have a pendant with a low ceiling?

Yes, where nobody walks: over a dining table, an island or a bedside. Hang the bottom of the shade 75–85 cm above the table, which on a low ceiling simply means a shorter flex.

How do I make a low ceiling feel higher?

Light the upper third of the walls rather than the floor. Uplighting wall lights, a lamp washing a tall bookcase and a pale matt ceiling all draw the eye upward.

Do I need an electrician to fit a flush ceiling light?

Every light in this guide is hardwired. Swapping a ceiling light like for like, with the circuit isolated, is the one job that can sensibly stay DIY; new positions and any bathroom work are for a registered electrician.
