Along a garden path

What matters here

  • Use knee-height posts, 45–80 cm tall, along a path.
  • Space them 2–3 m apart and stagger them left and right.
  • Light the gate, the bends and the steps; leave straight runs darker.

Best for a garden path

1. Tokyo Outdoor Path Light

Tokyo Outdoor Path Light — Bronze, 70cm

£63 Free UK delivery over £40 · 30-day returns

A slim bronze post, 70 cm tall, topped with an opal diffuser that glows softly instead of showing a bulb. That height sits in the knee-high band, so a staggered row every 2–3 m gives pools of light that just meet. The post is stainless steel, and it dims on a trailing-edge dimmer.

Mirage Outdoor Lantern Path Light — Anthracite, 86cm

£130 Free UK delivery over £40 · 30-day returns

A small glazed lantern, 13 cm square, on an 86 cm post, so the path carries the same box-lantern look as a Mirage wall light at the door. Four clear panes send light sideways and down across the paving. It takes one E27 bulb and dims.

Beside a drive

What matters here

  • Set a sensor's timer longer than the door's, for unloading the car.

Best for a wide drive

3. DL31 Outdoor Path Light

DL31 Outdoor Path Light — Matt Black, 100cm

£135 Free UK delivery over £40 · 30-day returns

A tiered black shade, 31 cm across, on a 1 m post, that lays a broad pool of light on the ground around it. That reach suits the edge of a drive, where you want fewer, wider pools rather than a line of small ones. Stainless steel, one E27 lampholder, and it dims.

6. Glow Solar Lantern

Glow Solar Lantern — Black

£60 Free UK delivery over £40 · 30-day returns

A black lantern that is solar-powered and rechargeable, so no cable has to cross the deck at all. Its 35 lumens of 3200K light give a candle-like glow on a table or a step, and a touch dimmer takes it lower still. At IP44 it can stay out through a shower.

Around a patio or terrace

What matters here

  • Keep the patio warmer and dimmer than the path leading to it.

  • Use 2700K: warm light flatters stone, brick and planting.

Best for a terrace edge

7. Sem Glass Panel Post Aluminium Lantern

Sem Glass Panel Post Aluminium Lantern — Black

£130 Free UK delivery over £40 · 30-day returns

A 20 cm glass cube in a black aluminium frame that sits on top of a low wall, pier or post. On a terrace it marks the edge with a warm glow, and the panelled frame casts soft shadow lines across the paving. It takes one E27 bulb and dims.

Over an outdoor table

What matters here

  • Hang the base 75–85 cm above the tabletop.

  • Hang it from a covered roof; IP44 pendants want shelter overhead.

9. Dale Opal Globe Outdoor Pendant Light

Dale Opal Globe Outdoor Pendant Light — Black

£45 Free UK delivery over £40 · 30-day returns

A round opal glass globe on a black fitting, so the bulb disappears into an even, moonlit glow. That makes it kind to the eyes across a table, where a bare bulb would glare. IP54 gives it more weather margin than most outdoor pendants, and its single E27 lampholder dims with a dimmable bulb.

10. Renzo Adjustable Outdoor LED Wall Light

Renzo Adjustable Outdoor LED Wall Light — Black

£90 Free UK delivery over £40 · 30-day returns

Fixed to the house or a garden wall, the Renzo has a head that tilts, so you can aim its 650 lumens of 3000K light up into a canopy or across a border. At IP65 it takes water jets, so it is fine on a wall with no shelter at all.

Questions we get asked

How far apart should garden path lights be?

Space knee-height bollards 2–3 m apart and stagger them left and right, so their pools of light just touch. Pairing them opposite each other is what makes a path look like a runway.

How tall should a path light be?

Between 45 and 80 cm suits most paths: low enough to keep the source out of your eyes. Shorter posts suit cottage paths; taller ones suit borders and drives.

What IP rating do garden lights need?

IP44 is the floor for path lights that stand well above the ground. Use IP65 or higher in planted beds that get watered, and IP67 for anything set into the ground or a deck.

How bright should garden lighting be?

Dimmer than you might think: your eyes adjust to the dark, so a few hundred lumens per fitting is plenty. Keep everything at 2700K warm white.

Do I need an electrician for garden lighting?

Yes, for mains lights. In England a new circuit out to the garden is notifiable under Part P, and buried cable needs to be armoured or ducted, with RCD protection.

Are solar garden lights worth it?

They are an honest shortcut where there is no cable, but expect a soft glow rather than real light. A short, grey December gives them much less charge than June.

Let the light finder narrow it down.
